In Remembrance

Sometimes it’s easy to forget,

sipping our cappuccinos

and beaming our opinions

on politics

and businesses

and celebrities

out for the whole first world to see,

our way of life had a cost.

We get so busy,

certain our anger is righteous,

sure we could run things better,

blaming uniforms,

forgetting the humans inside.

But how much do we believe in our cause?

Enough to turn off the computers and smartphones?

Enough to fight?

Enough to die?

Probably not.

But there’s no need,

because someone already fought,

someone already died,

so that you can have those opinions,

and voice them.

Someone already fought,

someone already died,

so that you can make a difference,

so this country can be better.

Someone already fought,

someone already died,

so that you need not fear a uniform.

Someone is fighting,

someone is dying,

to protect your freedoms,

and bring them to others.

In an ideal world,

there would be no need for soldiers,

no need for wars.

But this world is far less than ideal.

So someone has to fight,

someone has to die,

to protect the few ideals we have.

The least we can do,

is say “Thank you”.
